Islamabad: Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza recently announced that the federal government is set to launch a PKR 500 billion nutrition programme to counter the country’s worsening stunting and malnutrition situation, according to news sources.

He said that the government was working to develop the largest public-sector project focused on human nutrition in national history. The advisor made these remarks while addressing an event held to assess Pakistan’s progress in achieving health-related targets set by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pakistan has committed to accomplishing 169 SDG targets (pertaining to matters of healthcare, poverty, education, gender equality) by 2030.

Dr Zafar said that the project is close to getting approved by the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). He stated that this project would use inter-sectoral collaborations to implement the 12 proven nutrition interventions. He called onto public and private bodies of all sectors to join forces on resolving development challenges faced by the country.
