Karachi: The Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) has announced the name for Karachi’s mass rapid transit system, a news source reported. The project which is a part of Sindh government’s Mass Transit Master Plan has been named “Karachi Breeze.”
The concept behind the name comes from the ease in transport that the BRT will provide to the general public. SMTA Managing Director Muhammad Athar was quoted saying that as the cool evening sea breeze of our metropolitan city offers relief from the heat, Karachi Breeze will enable commuters to ‘breeze’ past congestion.
Most of the people in Karachi travel in private vehicles, including cars and motorcycles. According to research conducted on behalf of the Karachi BRT project, private vehicles account for 84% of the total traffic mix but carry only 54% of commuters. Public transport accounts for only 3% of all vehicles but transports about 34% of all commuters.
