Rawalpindi: In the backdrop of Pakistan Railways’ decision to start freight services, the authorities concerned have decide to expand Margalla Dry Port in Islamabad, reported a news source. The port will serve as a prominent station for Pakistan Railways freight trains.
The first freight train, as announced by Pakistan Railways, will start rolling from December 25 and related arrangements in this regard are being finalised. The freight service will be inaugurated by Pakistan Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.
With freight service being taken up at the national level, Pakistan Railways has also placed an order for 200 new freight coaches, which will be prepared by Railway Carriage Factory. Reportedly, the coaches will be ready in three months. The decision of launching freight services has also be welcomed by traders representing federation of chambers.
The news source also revealed that the production of 28 coaches for Rehman Baba Expressway is also in its final stages. The coaches will be handed over to the Pakistan Railways authorities on December 22.
