Peshawar: Marble units in Peshawar and Shabqadar are being shifted to Mohmand Economic Zone on the orders of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan in December 2020, according to media reports published on Thursday (October 7).

As per the details shared, the government is facilitating the owners by bearing the transportation cost. It was mentioned that the government has provided six months to 400 marble unit owners to shift their machinery. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Economic Zones Development & Management Company (KPEZMDC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Javed Khattak disclosed that KPEZMDC provides full support to facilitate the owners.
Moreover, the decision to shift the marble units was taken to address the environmental pollution issues caused by the marble industry in the city. Sharing more details, it was informed that the marble units will be allocated 184 plots (per acre each) in Mohmand Economic Zone. It was revealed that the government has allotted per acre plot at the price of PKR 10 million on an easy instalment plan. The owners must PKR 3 million at the time of shifting and the remaining amount will be paid in instalments.

KPEZMDC CEO disclosed that the rate given to marble industries is less than that offered to other industries. He went on to say that the construction cost in Mohmand district is high because it is a mountainous region. Furthermore, it was revealed that the government has spent PKR 1.4 billion on the construction of Mohmand Economic Zone to develop it as a state-of-the-art facility for industries where security, water, internet, and electricity are available round the clock.
