Lahore: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) is set to introduce a new solid waste collection system in the city which will see to a six-zone district division – four of which will encompass urban localities while two will cover the rural areas, according to news sources.

LWMC Chairman Riaz Hameed Chaudhry briefed Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar about the institutional restricting, for which the CM directed the new solid waste collection model to be implemented at the earliest and asked for further improvement in the city’s cleanliness system. He stressed that the service delivery process needs to be enhanced as it would be covering the entire Lahore under the new system.

CM Buzdar also asked for the LWMC to develop a waste-to-energy project as 6,000 tons of the solid waste is being collected from Lahore on a daily basis.
LWMC informed the meeting that due to the lack of awareness, people do not properly dispose their waste in containers. The firm also presented a proposal for new landfill sites vacant at Akhtarabad (on the other side of Ravi River). The waste management corporation expressed plans to reserve primary waste collection (which includes door-to-door collection), mechanical sweeping and washing of roads for itself and outsourcing the secondary services.
The meeting decided that the LWMC will collect solid waste from homes in Lahore, through vehicles.
