Lahore: The Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station on Wednesday achieved another significant milestone in terms of its contribution of low-cost hydel electricity to the National Grid by crossing the 10-billion-unit generation mark, according to news sources.

This power generation has earned Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA) a revenue of about PKR 75 billion. In addition, the low-cost hydel electricity project has also saved the national exchequer from spending PKR 100 billion – which would have been the cost for equal electricity generation produced through a thermal process.
Furthermore, it is also informed that the Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station has proven instrumental in meeting with the country’s electricity needs and promoting socio-economic development.

The project is located on the Tunnel No 4 of the Tarbela Dam encompassing three generation units – with a capacity of producing 470 megawatts (MW) each. With the completion of the 4th extension, reportedly, the production capacity of the station has increased to 4,888 MW from 3,478 MW. Meanwhile, the it was also hailed as the flagship project of WAPDA by the World Bank (WB).
