Lahore: The Local Government (LG) Department has approved a PKR 10 billion master plan for the ‘Lahore Old Walled City’, news sources reported on November 8.

The approved master plan calls for the rehabilitation of historic bazaars, the reconstruction of all 12 gates of old Lahore, and the restoration of monuments and the homes of prominent public personalities. The local government secretary has formally authorised the master plan, which will be executed in partnership with other municipal bodies. The following development initiatives are proposed in the plan:
- Development and restoration of over 200 historical bazaars
- Restoration of the houses of important literary persons
- Development of tourist centres and tourism corridors in the city
- Rehabilitation of monuments and public buildings

Furthermore, the project would be a joint effort of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), the local government, the Housing Department of Punjab, the Lahore Urban Unit, the Tourism Department of Punjab, the Archaeology Department of Punjab, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), and the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Speaking to the reporters, LG secretary Mubashar Hussain said that the project will be implemented to improve the urban infrastructure of the old city to make it more attractive to tourists and restore it to its original form.
