Karachi: Recently, the Sindh Government has decided to proceed with letting the relevant local bodies take over the responsibility of collecting property taxes. According to a news report, this decision has been taken by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah during a meeting with a team from World Bank, led by senior economist Yoonhee Kim at CM house.
During the meeting, it was highlighted that the current collection of property tax in Sindh amounts to PKR 2 billion, whereas a total of PKR 7.2 billion could be raised. A survey of Karachi was conducted which revealed a figure of 65,000 households eligible to pay property tax, whereas only 35,000 households are presently registered for taxation. The CM hence highlighted that it was essential that property taxes be rendered as the responsibility of the local bodies only.
