Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday sought a reply from the director general (environment) in a petition seeking a ban on the sale of polythene bags in the city, a news source reported.

LHC Justice Jawad Hassan heard the petition filed by Sunita Gulzar Ahmed. The petitioner maintained that the continued use of polythene bags was causing major damage to the city’s sewerage system.
In response, Justice Hassan issued a notice to the DG Environment and sought his reply on the matter in the next hearing.

Meanwhile, the high court will reportedly take up a public interest petition challenging the legality of Section 3 of the Punjab Prohibition on Manufacture, Use, Sale and Import of Polythene Bags Ordinance, 2002.
The said ordinance allows the manufacturing, sale, and use of polythene bags above the 15 microns thickness mark.

Previously, Abuzar Salman Khan Niazi, a local lawyer, argued that the use of polythene bags of the said thickness resulted in damaging consequences for the environment and citizens.
