Lahore: The Lahore High Court has issued directions to preserve blackbucks, which are an endangered species of antelope predominantly found in South-East Asia, under the Punjab Wildlife Act 1947, according to news sources.
In a verdict issued on a public interest petition filed by a citizen, Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh instructed the government to implement the recommendations made by the court-appointed Blackbucks Commission.

The commission was led by senior lawyer Dr Pervez Hassan, who suggested that the hunting of blackbucks should be banned entirely. He added that measures to safeguard this endangered species should also be implemented in Lal Sohanra Park Bahawalpur and Cholistan area.

Further, the commission agreed that the preservation of such a rare species should be ensured with proper measures and allocation of funds. The court ordered the commission to meet every six months and submit its report to the deputy registrar judicial. Additionally, the government was instructed to prioritise biodiversity and safeguard other vulnerable species as well.
