Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce the ban on the use of plastic bags all over Punjab, according to a news reported published on Friday (September 18). This ruling extends to the manufacturing, use, and distribution of polythene bags in the places where it is applicable.

Currently, this ban is only applicable for the Lahore, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad districts. LHC Justice Shahid Karim was presiding over a hearing of a public interest petition in this regard. During the course of proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel raised this concern; stating that other districts of Punjab were currently using environmentally hazardous plastic bags.

In response, the judge instructed the EPA to extend this ban across the province and to give 10 days to shopping malls and large stores to comply with these orders. A law officer had also filed a report about the existing ban in three districts, with details regarding any action taken against violators.
