Karachi: Sindh Local Government Minister for Forest Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Monday issued directives to prioritise the urban forest programme, amenity plants, and the Bahman Biodiversity Park Larkana in countering the harmful implications of climate change in the country, according to news reports.

He presided over a meeting with Secretary Forests & Wildlife Department Dr Badar Jameel Mendhro, Chief Conservator Javed Mehar, Additional Secretary Forests & Wildlife Aijaz Nizamani, and other officials to examine the project under Forest Department Annual Development Programme (ADP).
He remarked that for the next ADP, a PKR 500 million project for tree planting on the 200,000-acre forest tract retrieved from encroachments in the Indus riverine area should be devised. He also stated that a request for resources should be made far in advance of the deadline to ensure on-time completion.
Mr Shah also ordered the establishment of a surveillance system to prevent the re-occupation of forest department territory in Pucca and riverine areas.

Furthermore, the province minister stated that the existing urban forest in Lyari River and neighbouring places has to be enlarged. He also stated that frequent urban forest initiatives must be incorporated in the annual development plan.
