Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has launched an extensive Smart Metering initiative alongside enhanced safety measures across Lahore and surrounding regions to tackle power theft and improve service quality. This major step is part of LESCO’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and reduce electricity losses, benefiting residents of Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, and Nankana Sahib.
As part of its strategy to curb power theft, LESCO has started installing scanning meters and aerial bundled cables in areas with high theft rates. These advanced meters are designed to monitor electricity consumption more accurately and reduce losses. The company has already installed 55,000 smart meters as part of a broader five-year business plan, aiming to install a total of 535,000 meters. These meters have helped LESCO recover PKR 4.23 billion through detection bills and PKR 35.12 billion from defaulters.

In addition to the metering upgrades, LESCO has made significant safety improvements. The company has begun installing insulated conductors in high-risk areas such as GOR, Cantt, Johar Town, and Gulberg. These new safety measures are expected to prevent accidents and enhance overall system reliability.
To ensure better working conditions and improve service quality, LESCO has also established a new Health, Safety, and Environment Directorate. This new department will focus on reducing workplace accidents and ensuring safer working conditions for employees.
The company’s efforts to curb power theft and improve service are paying off. Through the reclamation of transformers in workshops located in Kasur and Sheikhupura, LESCO has saved nearly PKR 100 million annually. Additionally, LESCO has built seven new 132kV grid stations, upgraded 16 transformers, and reconductored over 116 km of power lines, enhancing the overall power distribution network.
LESCO has also shown its commitment to addressing corruption and negligence within its ranks, taking disciplinary action against 1,400 officers as part of its drive for accountability.
