Islamabad: Pakistan Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed has expressed an interest in constructing a mono-rail track as part of the development of the Leh Expressway project, according to a news source. As per reports, a Chinese firm has already voiced its willingness to get involved in the project and extended its help in this regard.

Even if the proposal does receive the go-ahead, it is expected that work on the project will not begin for another three months. According to Minister Rasheed, the proposed track will help to facilitate commuters belonging to the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

In addition, the minister announced that a Railway University and an IT institute will be established along the Leh Expressway. These educational institutes will be developed in cooperation with China, while Pakistan Railways will provide the required land for the institutes.

Speaking about the Main Line-1 project, Minister Rasheed said that the infrastructure of the Pakistan Railways is expected to be upgraded under this project, and will eventually reduce the travel time between Karachi and Rawalpindi.
