Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has renamed the Leh Expressway and Flood Channel project as Rawal Expressway and Flood Channel project, and its new PC-1 will be submitted to the Planning and Development Department in the coming week, according to news published on May 6.

According to an RDA senior official (whose name was not disclosed), the construction cost of the said project was also decreased from PKR 200 billion to PKR 90 billion. Under the new plan, the RDA will construct a cemented nullah and trunk sewer. It was disclosed that 17-kilometre roads will be developed on both sides of the nullah from Kattarian Bridge on I.J. Principal Road to Soan Bridge on GT Road. Moreover, the width of the concrete nullah and dual carriageway at New Kattarian will be 55 metres and will increase to 80 metres at the ending point at Soan Bridge. It was revealed that no new bridge will be constructed as per the new PC-1. The existing bridges will be modified and repaired and no new interchanges will be constructed.
The senior official also mentioned that the government was planning to construct a sewerage treatment plant in order to treat the sewer of Leh Nullah and prevent flooding. It was disclosed that PKR 65 billion will be allocated for the construction of Leh Nullah and dual carriageway whereas PKR 25 billion will be reserved for land acquisition.

Reportedly, a new survey will be conducted for the land acquisition as less area will be required for the construction. According to Rawalpindi Commissioner Noorul Amin Mengal, the project will be developed on government funding with 60% of funds will be provided by the federal government and 40% by the Punjab government. A public hearing on Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) is expected to be held on May 11.
