Faisalabad: The Punjab Environment Department has prepared a bill to discontinue the usage of shopping bags in the province, according to the news sources. The draft of this bill has been forwarded to the provincial ministry of the law to be made into a legislation.

The legislative act will be presented before the provincial assembly meetings that will be in session from the August 21. After the bill is a passed, a warning period on plastic-bag use of two months will follow the approval of the act. The sale and use of plastic bags are likely to be banned in all 36 districts of the province from November 15 onwards. The government plans to replace polythene bags with cloth bags.
Please note that the notion of banning plastic bags in Punjab was first considered during the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) meeting held in June this year. It was brought to the meeting’s attention that the severe environmental damage caused by the plastic bags has left lasting imprints on human health.

It was also said that ban on plastic bags and their production has taken the form of a precaution of a global scale, to preserve the planet’s health. Following the meeting, the EPD formed a legislative committee, a technical committee and a committee to study the social and economic effects of plastic bag usage. These committee were assigned the t ask to submit their recommendations on the matter.
