Lahore: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is looking to develop Miyawaki-style urban forests in other parts of the city including private housing scheme, according to a news report shared in national dailies on July 22. In this regard, the authority has sought assistance from sponsors and developers of private housing schemes.
In order to spread awareness among real estate developers on how to set up an urban forest in their respective projects, the authority arranged an introductory seminar at the LDA City Sports Complex in Johar Town. LD Chief Planner Syed Nadeem Zaidi, Water Specialists Riaz Hussain and forestry experts shared useful information on techniques used in planting an urban forest, how to nourish these plants and other related matters with the audience.
At the moment, work is underway on setting two urban forests in the city; one in Liberty market and the other in Faisal Town Block C. Not to mention that earlier this month the Parks and Horticulture Authority Director General Tariq Ali Basra ordered directors of all seven zones of Lahore to identify areas for setting up more such forests.
At the same time, the LDA Private Housing Scheme Rules 2017 Section 15 makes it mandatory for the developers of private housing schemes to plant trees on the 7% of the society’s total area. For this purpose, the project developers are bound by law to get the PHA approval for their horticulture and landscape plans.
