Lahore: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Lahore has decided to lay a new sewage system in Gulberg under the LDA Master Plan 2050, news sources reported on February 2.

Under the said LDA Master Plan, WASA will replace sewerage lines in the Main Market, Mini Market, Center Point, Ghalib Market, Gaddafi Stadium and Firdous Market areas of Gulberg, Lahore. The authority has estimated PKR 4.75 billion as the total cost of the project, which will also include the construction of a temporary wastewater processing facility near Kalma Chowk. The permanent water treatment plant, however, will be built near Ring Road on WASA-owned 237 kanal land. The permanent water treatment facility will process 2,000 cusecs of grey water daily. As per the sources, the WASA has decided to take the initiative to increase capacity keeping in mind the ongoing surge in vertical buildings and the Central Business District (CBD) Downtown project. Once completed, the project will be sufficient till 2050.

It is pertinent to mention that Gulberg is one of the most populated and high-density areas of Lahore with many high-rise projects. It is also home to the Punjab government’s flagship Central Business District project – which is the country’s first sustainable residential and commercial area.
