Lahore: The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has finalised its bylaws to facilitate the development of low-cost apartment projects in its administered areas, a news source reported. The rules were discussed in a meeting held on Tuesday (May 19) with Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat heading the proceedings.

As per the proposed rules, the maximum area of low-cost apartment scheme area will be 100 kanals while the minimum covered area of an apartment building in these projects will be 10 marlas. The rules also specify the minimum size of any apartment featured in these projects, stating that no apartment can have a covered area smaller than 3 marlas.

In addition to the abovementioned rules, the LDA also proposed a height limit of 60 feet for each apartment building, where it cannot have more than five storeys. The minimum width of streets in the low-cost apartment schemes is 20 feet, while the main road has to be 60 feet-wide.
The rules also recommend that developers will leave 5% of the projects’ total areas as open spaces, while 2% of the total land will be reserved as car parking areas. Furthermore, the societies are to reserve a minimum of 3% of their land for public buildings such as schools and hospitals.

The meeting members also agreed to the proposal of allowing developers to set up a combined graveyard facility within a five-kilometer radius of their projects. Furthermore, the developers will be required to purchase property for their low-cost projects at market rates from private landowners.
