Islamabad: The Law Ministry has started preparing the rules, terms and conditions for the workings of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, a news source reported. The Ministry must lay out the procedures and rules for the experience, qualification and conditions for appointment to the CPEC Authority. This authority has been established after the promulgation of several ordinances by the President of Pakistan.
According to the ordinance issued by the Prime Minister (PM), the Authority will consist of a Chairperson, a Chief Executive Officer, an Executive Director Operations, and an Executive Director Research along with six members. The officers will be appointed directly by the PM for a period of four years, and will be up for reappointment once their term has ended. The head office for the CPEC Authority will be in Islamabad.

The Chief Executive Officer will be appointed on deputation, and must be a civil servant of at least BS-20. The prerequisites for the remaining positions will be prescribed in the rules. The PM will have the authority to remove any member of the authority as he sees fit. The Chief Executive Officer will act as the Chairperson if at any point the position is vacant, or the appointed Chairperson is unable to perform their duties.

The authority will conduct all its functions and business in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Pakistan and China, as well as with decisions taken in the Joint Cooperation Committee meetings. The functions of the authority are subject to changes at the discretion of the federal government.
