Karachi: The Sindh Coastal Development Authority (SCDA) has decided to plant palm trees on 1,000 acres of land in the Thatta district, according to news published on June 16.

A meeting of the SCDA, chaired by Provincial Minister Ismail Rahu, decided to launch the palm tree plantation project, at the estimated cost of PKR 356 million. Minister Ismail Rahu went on to say that under the said project, 60,000 trees will be planted on the land in the current year. It was mentioned that a single tree will provide a yield of one maund oil.
Moreover, the meeting was informed that the Forest Department has handed over 2,000 acres of land to the authority for the project. Last year, the Sindh Cabinet approved the plantation of palm trees on 3,000 acres of land.

It is important to note that the SCDA has started a pilot project for a palm tree plantation on 30 acres of land. Adviser Murtaza Wahab informed the meeting that the Sindh’s Environment and Coastal Development departments also operated a mini extraction plant of palm oil.
