Mansehra: Deputy Commissioner Mansehra Dr Qasim Ali Khan on Tuesday (September 21) stated that the process of obtaining more than 8,000 kanals of land has been initiated for the construction of 300 megawatts (MW) Balakot Hydropower project in the district, according to news sources.

As per the details by the deputy commissioner, the imposition of Section-4 of the Land Acquisition Act 1894 and other formalities are being completed for releasing the payment to owners. He further added that the land in Sangar, Ghanool, Paras, and Bala Schain patwar circles in the Balakot tehsil was being acquired while district revenue department teams were carrying out the task in their areas. The bidding and contractors’ hiring process has been completed and a consortium of companies have been finalised to work on the hydropower project.
It is pertinent to mention that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government gave a go-ahead to the execution of the project in March this year, after it was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), at an estimated cost of USD 750 million.

The project is being executed by Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation at Kunhar River in the Kaghan Valley near the 880 megawatts Suki Kinari Hydropower project. The KP government has been executing the project with financial support from Asian Development Bank.
