The announcement, which highlights Lahore’s rich historical, cultural, and tourism heritage, was made following a decision by the ECO member states. A 25-member delegation from ECO is set to visit Lahore on April 13, 2025, where the formal announcement of the city’s nomination will be made. During their visit, the delegation will participate in various cultural and official activities, including a Council of Permanent Representatives meeting, which will be hosted at the Civil Secretariat under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
This recognition follows the footsteps of Shahrisabz, Uzbekistan, which held the title in the past, and Erzurum, Turkey, which will be named the Tourism Capital for 2025. Lahore’s selection for this prestigious title is seen as a major step in promoting the city’s cultural and historical heritage on a global scale.
The visiting delegation is scheduled to attend Lahore’s Mela Chiraghan, visit the Walled City, and tour the Punjab Safe Cities Authority. A special luncheon in honor of the delegation will also be hosted at the Governor House.
Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb welcomed the development, calling it a momentous occasion for Lahore and the entire province. She emphasized the importance of showcasing Lahore’s unique beauty, culture, and history to the world. “Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz wants the world to witness Lahore’s historic, cultural, and civilizational beauty,” said Aurangzeb.
