Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of five new tehsils in Lahore, as reported on August 21.

As per details, the summary for this initiative has been circulated among ministers for final approval. The Punjab government has appointed five Grade-17 officers as assistant commissioners for the newly established tehsils: Sadar, Wagah, Shalimar, Ravi, and Lahore City. The officers transferred to these positions include Assistant Commissioner Abdul Wasit Siddiqui from Gujranwala City, Assistant Commissioner Fatima Arshad from Sharqpur, Khawaja Muhammad Umeer Mehmood from the Chief Minister’s Office, Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Saleem from Mankira, and Adil Umar from the Welfare Wing Services Department.
Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman has directed that administrative and budgetary matters for the new tehsils be managed in accordance with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s orders. These new tehsils are being created within the existing boundaries of Lahore District, with the population distribution remaining consistent. The reorganization will see the previous five sub-units expanded into ten divisions.

The initiative includes the recruitment of 210 employees across the new tehsils, with staffing comprising various roles from assistant commissioners to clerks and support staff. Each tehsil will have a dedicated budget of PKR 2,822,084 for development and administrative expenses. Financial projections indicate that the combined annual revenue from the new tehsils, including TMEs, land revenue, and water rates, will reach PKR 10.86 billion. Additionally, an extra allocation of PKR 7.28 crore will be provided to the District Education Authority to support the new administrative units.
Lahore’s population has surpassed 13 million, the creation of these additional tehsils is crucial for effective governance. The city’s population density, particularly in the City area, necessitated this expansion to streamline administrative processes.
