Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to begin the construction of three small dams in the districts of Tank and Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan), news sources reported on April 24. The dams will have a total installed capacity of generating 25 megawatts (MW) power.

As per the reports, the three dams slated to be constructed include; Tank Zam Dam, Chodwan Zam Dam, and Daraban Dam. It was also noted that the areas where the dams are planned are worst afflicted by water scarcity. The development of new dams would assist to tackle water scarcity issues while also irrigating 109,721 acres of barren land.

Furthermore, irrigation of additional fields will increase regional food security. According to an official, the decision would also benefit the local job market. The villagers expressed their delight at the construction of new dams, which had been a long-standing desire.
It is also worth noting that the federal government has pledged to build 100 small dams in Balochistan to alleviate the growing water scarcity problem. According to sources, a total of 64 dams have been built thus far, with the remainder expected to be completed within the next two years.
