Islamabad: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP government recently revealed that it had sought a USD 142 million loan grant from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to construct, rehabilitate and revitalise core urban infrastructure of five cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the ‘Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP)’, according to a news report published on October 5.

The said initiative aims to improve access to safely-managed water, solid waste management, sanitation and green urban infrastructure spaces in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Kohat, Mardan, and Mingora. This is to be achieved through two-interlinked outputs; enhancement and extension of public spaces and urban infrastructure in addition to strengthening the ‘institutional capacities of urban service providers, provincial government and city government’.

This urban infrastructure project in KP is being co-funded with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as the lead co-financer. It is expected to reduce urban pollution and prevent soil and water contamination. Under this initiative, ‘viable climate resilience measures and innovations’ will be incorporated into the detailed engineering designs.
