Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has still not acquired a landfill to dump over 800 tonnes of garbage collected from Peshawar city every day, despite having been allotted PKR 174.28 million for this purpose.
According to a news source, Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) Manager Taimur Ahmed Shah said that WSSP chose a site spanning 536 kanals in the Maryamzai area but the Department of Finance did not release funds. This is why the land in question could not be acquired.
Deputy Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud stated that the district administration imposed Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act on the chosen site, so the delay could not be blamed on the administration.
Residents and environmentalists have consistently been complaining about the environmental pollution caused by the improper disposal of garbage, to little avail.
