Peshawar: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced its decision to provide PKR 98 billion to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) for the improvement of municipal services in five cities, according to the news published on Monday (December 13).

As per the details, ADB has agreed to provide PKR 385 million under KP Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP) to improve municipal services in Abbottabad, Mingora, Kohat, Mardan, and Peshawar. It was disclosed that the financing will be utilized for the improvement of sewerage and drainage including sewerage treatment plants, development of green urban spaces, water supply system, and provision of integrated solid waste management systems.
According to the Secretary of Local Government and Rural Development Department Shakeel Ahmed Mian, PKR 98 billion support will be used over a period of five years for municipal urban infrastructure, solid waste management, sewerage treatment plants, and water supply. He went on to say that the work on the projects will start from January or February next year.

Moreover, the ADB mentioned that the loan will benefit more than 3.5 million people in the five cities. Under this initiative, people will have access to clean and safe water, green urban spaces, integrated waste management and sanitation service, and gender-friendly facilities. New connections of the water supply system and smart water meters will be installed in 150,000 households.

- 93-kanal park in Phase-VII of Hayatabad Township, Peshawar
- Bagh Naran park in Hayatabad Peshawar
- Women business development centre in Kohat
- Mardan Ring Road green belt
- Mingora greater water supply scheme and water treatment plant
- Extension of water supply scheme and water treatment plant in Abbottabad
- Shimla park in Abbottabad
It is pertinent to note that ADB has also provided PKR 53 billion for Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
