Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government on Monday announced establishing the Urban Areas Development Authority (UDA) – through an ordinance – to oversee the existing nine development authorities (and their performance) operational within the province, according to news sources.

The UDA will ensure improvement in the provision of basic amenities to the public. A statement in this regard was issued by Chief Minister’s Special Assistant on Local Government, Elections and Rural Development Kamran Bangash, stating that the provision of these amenities was the government’s utmost priority. He said that the UDA will upscale the performance of the local government and the development authorities in Bannu, Kohat, Karak, Mardan, Galiyat, Swabi, Swat and Peshawar – which are reportedly paralysed.

Bangash said that the new authority will empower the existing development authorities to improve revenue generation and decision making. He also said that under the new authority, these authorities will come up with plans for affordable housing societies.
