Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Energy and Power Department is on the brink of a significant economic upturn, with 12 ongoing hydropower projects expected to generate an impressive annual revenue of PKR 50 billion, reveals a news source on January 11.

As per the details, the Planning and Development (P&D) Caretaker Advisor Dr Syed Sarfaraz Ali Shah recently shared insights into the province’s substantial potential in mineral and water resources, emphasising their pivotal role in boosting revenue.
Insights into the ongoing projects included Balakot Mansehra (300 MW), Madyen Swat (157 MW), Gabral Kalam (88 MW), Matiltan Swat (84 MW), Lawi Chitral (69 MW), Koto Dir (40.8 MW), Krora Shangla (11.8 MW), Chapri Charkhel Kuram (10.5 MW), and Mujahideen Torghar (6.9 MW). PEDO has a robust business and financial plan for the next 10 years, anticipating the completion of several projects with a total capacity of 2000 megawatts, contributing PKR 50 billion annually to the province.

Dr Shah detailed a comprehensive strategy aimed at increasing the Mineral Department’s annual income from PKR 4 to 6 billion. The real game-changer, however, lies in the hydropower sector, with ongoing projects set to contribute a substantial PKR 50 billion annually. This strategic move is poised to act as a catalyst for economic development, promising an array of new employment opportunities.
