Peshawar: The Khyber Pakthunkhwa (KP) government on Thursday banned the use of polythene bags in the province, a news source reported.

A decision to this effect was taken during a meeting in Peshawar, which was presided over by Chief Minister (CM) Mahmood Khan. Senior Provincial Minister Shehram Khan Tarakai; Minister for Information Shaukat Yousafzai; Minister for Environment Ishtiaq Urmer, and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Muhammad Israr were all present at the occasion.

The participants discussed the hazardous effects of plastic pollution environment and alternatives to tackle it. The chief minister formed a committee to this effect.

It has been tasked with recommending alternatives to polythene bags. Minister for Information Shaukat Ali Yousafzai heads the committee. Its members include Peshawar Commissioner, Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), representatives of the Water and Sanitation Services (WSSP) and environmental experts.

The CM stressed the need to launch an awareness campaign through print, electronic and social media to raise public awareness with regard to plastic pollution.
