Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is expected to table a women inheritance bill during a provincial assembly session, scheduled to take place today (Friday) – a news source reported. The provincial government has decided to make the move in a bid to prevent the deprivation of women’s share in inheritance.

With the new bill, the KP government aims to authorise the provincial women mohtasib to take action against practices that disenfranchise women from inheritance. One the bill becomes an Act, the mohtasib will be able to respond to complaints of women harassment at work place and deprivation of women’s share in parents’ property.
As per the rules of the bill, the women mohtasib will call upon the district administration to carry out the required action once they receive a complaints from any women who was deprived from her due share in inheritance.
The deputy commissioner (DC) concerned will have the duty to file the reports in the case, and issue a relevant directive for ensuring that the women receive their due share in any property.
Meanwhile, the provincial mohtasib will also have the authorisation of filing a reference in the civil court. On the other hand, the complainants will be allowed to reach the high court after 45 days of a judgment passed.

The KP assembly had also passed the Women Ownership Rights Bill in 2012. The bill was aimed at ensuring the provision of rights for women in the inherited property.
