Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the infrastructural development of Karachi and overall betterment of the city. The MoU was signed by the Karachi administrator, Laeeq Ahmed and UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative Knut Ostby.
With this agreement, Karachi has become the second municipality after Istanbul to enter such an agreement with UNDP.

As per the details, UNDP will work with KMC’s various departments such as Parks and Horticulture Department, for achieving targets outlined under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 15: Life on Land.
While development will primarily focus economic growth, urban development, environmental improvement, infrastructure development, solid waste management, health and education. Special focus is being given to addressing environmental pollution and tree plantation will be given its due importance in the city. Moreover, KMC and UNDP will cooperate for for skills development, increasing employment opportunities, and addressing the issue of urban-rural migration.

Knut Osby said that the UNDP will be working in close partnership with private entities to realize the agency’s goals.
