Karachi: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has handed over the land to the Sindh government’s Trans Karachi for the construction of the Red Line BRT’s bus depot, news sources reported on January 20.

The land has been allotted near Aladdin Park, the proposed end point of Pakistan’s first biogas-powered bus service. The decision was announced in a ceremony held by KMC for the proposed site handover. Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the project will be completed on priority to make provide relief to the daily commuters in Karachi. He also said that the government has expedited work and the handover of the new site will reduce traffic jams in the city during the construction phase as well.

It is important to note that the project includes the construction of a 26.6-kilometres BRT corridor with 24 stations in Karachi that includes both the Red Line corridor (24.2-kilometre) and the common corridor segment (2.4-kilometre), as well as feeder and direct transit routes to nearby districts. The facility will be powered by biogas, and a 31-acre biogas plant will be built near Bahns Colony.
