Karachi: Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani has directed the civic departments concerned to complete the desilting and cleaning work in drains within their respective jurisdictions by June 15, a news source reported.

He expressed his views on the matter during a meeting with officials of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), district municipal corporations (DMCs) and other civic agencies.
The officials concerned gave briefings on the progress with respect to the cleanliness drive in various nullahs. As per reports, the KMC is constructing walls along the nullahs in a bid to prevent citizens from disposing garbage in the drains.
The participants informed that there are 38 drains running in Karachi, and effluent from these drains pollute the seawater. These drains are situated in Yousuf Goth, Sadi Town, Malir Cantt, Safoora Goth, Palm Village, Amroha Society, Thaddo Dam, and Lat Basti.

In response, the commissioner directed the relevant departments to come up with effective measures against future emergency situations. He stressed on the need for ensuring cleanliness of chopping points of all drains ahead of the monsoon season.
