Faisalabad: The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has placed a ban on kilns operating on Bull Trench Kiln technology, a news source quoted EPA Deputy Director Malik Shaukat Hayat as saying. The agency has introduced zigzag technology, which promises to reduce environmental pollution by 70%.

The deputy director shared this information while speaking with kiln owners and members of the EPA. Anjuman Bhatta Malkan and Bhatta Khasht Association District President Chaudhary Abdul Razzaq Bajwa, Divisional President Hajji Islam, Toba Tek Singh District President Sheikh Amir Fayyaz, and Jhang District President Gulab Khan attended the meeting.
Sharing further details on how zigzag technology has proven better than BTK technology, Hayat said that the former consumes 30% less coal. He added that the brick production rate in modern kilns is much higher.

Bajwa said that over 20,000 kiln owners burn thousands of tons of coal on a daily basis. The zigzag technology will help bring down the level of environmental pollution. He also said that kiln owners will need government help to smoothly transition to the new technology.
