Since the resumption of passenger customs clearance on April 1, the pass has recorded significant growth in traffic and trade. By the end of October 2024, over 50,000 passengers and more than 11,000 vehicles had crossed the border. The port also processed an impressive 40,900 tonnes of import and export cargo, reflecting a 42.6% year-on-year increase in vehicle traffic and a remarkable 72.7% rise in trade volume, according to Khunjerab Customs.
Located at an altitude of approximately 5,000 meters, the Khunjerab Pass traditionally operated seasonally, closing during the harsh winter months. However, a joint statement issued by China and Pakistan in October 2024 announced the transition to year-round operations to enhance economic cooperation and cultural exchange.

With its strategic position on the Karakoram Highway connecting Xinjiang in China to Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan, the pass is set to become a continuous link for trade and connectivity. Officials also pledged to improve infrastructure and management at the port to accommodate increased traffic and streamline operations.
Travelers have been reminded that the port will remain closed on weekends. The Khunjerab Pass is now poised to play an even greater role in strengthening China-Pakistan relations and boosting regional trade.
