Islamabad: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) meeting on Monday (January 24) referred the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway project to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval, according to news sources. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jehanzaib Khan and was attended by Secretary Planning Abdul Aziz Uqaili and senior officials from Planning Commission and Federal Ministries and Divisions.

During the meeting, CDWP approved three development schemes worth PKR 13 billion, and projects related to Higher Education Commission, physical planning and housing, governance, and transport and communication sectors were submitted for meeting’s review. As per the details, Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project worth PKR 8.525 billion was approved by the committee. The committee referred PKR 108.41 billion Kharian-Rawalpindi to ECNEC for further consideration. Reportedly, the said project comes under Jhelum, Gujrat, and Rawalpindi districts. The project will be implemented by the National Highway Authority (NHA).
According to details, the project will encompass the construction of a 117.2-kilometre long, four lanes access-controlled motorway. It is a new motorway facility that will be an extension of the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway (M-11) and Sialkot-Kharian Motorway.

Moreover, the project will start from the junction interchange near Kharian on Sialkot Kharian Motorway and end at T-Chowk in Rawalpindi. The project was designed as a four-lane access-controlled facility, which can be expanded to six-lane as per Level of Service (LOS) requirements.
