Karachi: K-Electric (KE) has awarded the contract for setting up a 900-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant, along with its associated grids at Bin Qasim, a news source reported. As per officials, the power company recently finalised the agreement worth USD 650 million with a German firm, Siemens AG, and a Chinese construction company named Harbin Electric.

According to details, the electric supply company plans to operationalise the plant by the summer of 2021. KE CEO Moonis Alvi stated that the Bin Qasim power plant was essential for meeting Karachi’s future energy demands.
The firms will build the power project at KE’s Bin Qasim Power Complex. The project includes the upgradation of the associated transmission infrastructure. This dual-fuel facility will utilise re-gasified liquid natural gas (RLNG) as its primary source for energy generation.

Among the several planned power projects in Pakistan, this project will be one of those with newer and more efficient units to replace older plants.
Moreover, the power company recently initiated negotiations with the federal government in the former’s bid to procure additional power supply from the national grid. And, as per reports, the discussions pertaining to the supply of 500MWs of electricity from KANUPP-2 and KANUPP-3 have reached advanced stages.

Several KE officials revealed that the construction of the interconnection facilities would be completed within a time frame of two years following the government’s approval of the proposal. They added that another significant project of concerning the construction a 700MW coal-fired plant was also in the pipeline.
