Karachi: The Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) has been included in the multi-billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, a news source quoted Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed. An announcement to this effect will be made in five to 15 days.
Earlier, the authorities concerned demolished 80% of encroachments and other illegal structures on the Karachi Circular Railway’s (KCR) land. The anti-encroachment drive, started on the orders of the Supreme Court, continued in its ninth day.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner Wasim-ud-Din, and Gulberg Assistant Commissioner Malik Ikram in Nazimabad. Police personnel assisted the anti-encroachment staff.
The dwellers were given notices to vacate KCR land, while temporary business units were demolished along the seven-kilometre-long railway track. The demolition drive would resume after completion of the notice period.
Following the Supreme Court’s orders, the civic bodies had devised a plan to clear KCR land of 10,000 houses illegally constructed on 26 acres of railway land around its 27-kilometre track.
