Islamabad: The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has recommended the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Karakoram Highway Phase-I (Thakot to Raikot)” project, as reported on May 31.

According to the details, the project has been forwarded to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval. The project valued at PKR 567,453.369 million, aims to upgrade, improve, and realign the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Thakot to the Raikot bridge. The total length of the project is 241.086 km, which includes 224.911 km of the main KKH and 16.175 km of link roads.

Key components of the project include:
- Upgrading the KKH from Thakot to Dasu with a 103 km bypass.
- Relocating the KKH at Dasu Dam, undertaken by WAPDA.
- Upgrading the existing road from Sazin to Thor Nullah and R-1.
- Constructing a new section of the KKH after Basha/Thor Nullah.
The project is proposed to be financed through a Chinese soft loan and is expected to be completed within five years.
