Gilgit: The authorities concerned on Monday reopened the Karakoram Highway (KKH) to traffic in the Hasanabad District after a two-day closure, a news source reported.
The national highway was recently blocked due to flooding caused by an artificially-formed lake at Shisper burst. The floodwaters had washed away a portion of the road. As a result of the glacial burst, and the subsequent damage to the road, the officials ordered the temporary closure of the artery in Hasanabad.
The burst caused considerable damage to the boundary walls protecting the fields, as well as a piece of agricultural land. Few families were forced to relocate from the area.
Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman visited the area to review the situation. Officials of the GB Disaster Management Authority and district administration gave briefings on the matter.
They informed the CM that the burst had reduced the risk of glacial flooding in the region as all of the water in the 900-metre-long and 80-metre-deep Shisper Lake had been released.
In the meanwhile, all traffic on the Karakoram Highway to Hunza was diverted to Sas Valley in Nagar to prevent any untoward incident in the future.
