Karak: The majority of areas in the Karak district currently face water shortages, according to a news report. A Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) official, Asif Khan, said that the district needs small dams.
According to PHED sources, more than 1,000 tube wells, 25,000 pressure pumps, and 9,000 hand pumps have been installed across Karak. This has caused underground water levels to fall. The public water schemes, which handle these installations, have also faced issues of mismanagement.

Previously, a reverse osmosis facility had to be installed in the district headquarters at a cost of PKR 100 million. However, work on this project has not yet been initiated. The government, during its previous tenure, launched 142 water supply schemes, but several of them still await completion.
Khan said that the installation of such a large number of water pumps risks drying out underground water resources. There is some speculation that the water might turn brackish in about seven years’ time – thereby leading to further shortages.
