Karachi: The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has honoured Karachi with its One Planet City Challenge Award for 2018, a news source reported. The award recognises measures taken by Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar for curtailing environmental pollution in the city.
The award was signed by WWF Swedish Secretary General Hakan Wirten. It was handed over to the mayor by a delegation from the organization. The award is granted to the management of big cities for steps taken to control environmental pollution.
According to the delegation officials, Karachi emerged as the best candidate city in Pakistan. The city’s goal for 2020 is to cut its 2017 carbon emission levels by 40%.
Karachi plans to have as many as 200 zero-emission Green Buses operational in the metropolis by 2020. The project is funded by Green Climate Fund. Additionally, the Green Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network will be powered by bio-methane. It is expected to reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution in the city.
