Karachi: The city’s district administration on Thursday launched a project to remove overhead wires from the South District, a news source reported. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has sanctioned the project and 18 private telecom companies would collaborate to complete this project worth PKR 4 billion.

During the first phase, authorities concerned would clear Karachi’s South District of overhead telephone and television wires. Later, the project would be extended to other parts of the city. In the South District, the project would reach completion in four stages.
In the first stage, overhead cables in Red Zone would be shifted underground, followed by DHA and Clifton. In the last stage, remaining areas of the district would undergo the same treatment. To this effect, South Karachi DC Irshad Ahmed Sodhar stated that that the district would be clear of overhead wires by the end of 2020. He added that the administration would expand the project to remaining areas of Karachi immediately after – taking two years to complete.

The DC explained that the administration planned to put the wires two feet under the ground along the main roads of Karachi. He added that this project would cover the shifting of 400 kilometres (kms) of overhead wires, including the wires in the South District stretching across approximately 100 kms.
