Gilgit: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) started direct flights from Karachi to Skardu to promote tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), according to media reports.
On Monday, the first PIA Airbus-a320 landed at the Skardu Airport with 178 passengers and 8 crew members on board. The GB Governor Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon stated in a press release that the direct flights were started for the ease of locals and to promote tourism.

Moreover, the governor also said that the federal government is collaborating with the provincial government to develop the tourism industry in the region. Previously, PIA had launched a direct flight, twice a week, from Lahore to Skardu.
Further, he said that in future, international flights from GB will also be launched to boost tourism. The Governor also revealed that the government is working on making Skardu Airport an all-weather international airport.

To improve tourism in the region, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a Tourism Promotion and Regional Integration (TPRI) license to North Air, a new private airline. The airline will operate domestic flights from Islamabad to Gwadar, Islamabad to Skardu, Islamabad to Chitral, and Islamabad to Gilgit.
