Karachi: The World Bank (WB) recently conducted a diagnostic study to identify the sectors and areas of the city that were in need of necessary developmental support, according to news sources. As per the publication, the WB evaluation is expected to help in formulating a development plan for the city over the next decade — with the initiative aimed at overhauling local government bodies, including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Divisional Metropolitan Corporations, District Councils and water/sanitation bodies.

The Sindh government will work in collaboration with WB to launch major development works in water and sanitation, solid waste management, and roads infrastructure in the city — with the projects estimated to cost USD 10 billion.
Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said in his address to the 47th batch of under-training assistant commissioners (ACs) that this project was aimed at making Karachi ‘one of the best livable cities of the world’. He further revealed that under a new legislation, the chairpersons of local government bodies and city mayors across the province now had the authority to impose local taxes and execute development work in their jurisdictions.

While answering a question about the development of Tharkparker, the CM stated that the provincial government had invested USD 4 billion from its own resources in the area in an effort to facilitate water provision through the installation of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants.
