Lahore: The Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) is looking to launch construction work on Kalma Chowk Remodelling project in order to provide signal-free access to the Central Business District by next month, a news source reported on October 17.

As per the details, the preparations for initiating construction are underway at a steady pace. The construction contract for the Kalma Chowk Remodelling project, worth PKR 5 billion, has been awarded to the National Logistics Cell (NLC). The said project will encompass two underpasses after crossing the Kalma intersection underpass. This will provide signal-free access to the CBD, Walton and Ali Zaib Road.
The news source mentioned that the project will start from the Kalma Chowk Underpass, separating it from the first underpass access to the Lahore Central Business District. Another underpass will be constructed while turning towards Firdous Market from Centre Point. Apart from this, the project will feature several allied at-grade developments works on Gulberg Main Boulevard. Under this project, underground sewerage and drainage will also be updated.

After the completion of the said project, the Gulberg Main Boulevard will be a signal-free corridor. It was disclosed that the construction of CBD Boulevard is also included in this project. The Kalma Chowk Remodelling project is expected to be completed within 10 months.
Traffic Diversion Plan
A spokesperson of PCBDDA mentioned the authority’s technical team held a meeting with the Lahore Traffic Police to finalise the traffic diversion plan during the construction of CBD Boulevard and the remodelling of Kalma Chowk underpass. The PCBDDA team discussed the diversion plan during the construction of CBD Boulevard.

The traffic officers were informed that in the first phase of construction, one side of Main Boulevard will be open for traffic coming from Barkat Market moving towards Liberty Market. The service lane will be open for traffic coming from Firdous Market towards Barkat Market and Ferozepur Road.
Moreover, the traffic coming from Model Town towards Liberty will be diverted from Gaddafi Stadium. A clear passage for the residents of Falcon Society was also suggested. The traffic police accepted the traffic diversion plan with a few changes.
