On 18th December, Kalma Chowk was closed for every kind of traffic to start the construction of two underpasses and Metro Bus pathway.
As per stats, around 1.5 million vehicles use this intersection daily so the underpass project was proposed. Motorists are already in trouble nowadays due to the on-going construction for the Metro Bus System project and now they will have to suffer for the next 20 days because of the construction work at this intersection.
City Traffic Police and TEPA have already issued a traffic diversion plan but the decision will directly result in traffic congestion on Canal Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Qaddafi Stadium, Zahoor Elahi Road, The Mall and Jail Road.
According to Lahore Commissioner and Kalma Chowk Project Directors, the intersection will remain closed till 31st January, 2013. The project would cost the government Rs 1.75 billion.
