Faisalabad: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has asked for immediate construction of Kalabagh Dam and labelled it as important for all provinces, according to a news report. The Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) Acting President Usman Rauf appreciated the Supreme Court’s suo moto notice on the issue and said that every Pakistani is disturbed by the prevailing water shortage which had created a serious problem in the country.
He also pointed out that by international standards, each country should have a storage capacity of 120 days, but that Pakistan can only store water for up to 30 days, which is a serious issue.
Rauf also said that water is important for Pakistan’s economy, which is largely agrarian. He also called the construction of new water reservoirs imperative for economic survival and said that millions of acres of land could be brought under agricultural production, creating jobs, if more water reservoirs are constructed.
